For my artifact I chose the Bulul. The Bulul is a statue that originates from the Philippines, specifically the Ifugao province. It’s traditionally carved from the wood from Narra trees in Ifugao and are carved into many different styles including a man with hands on knees,  standing straight with arms on the side, or squatting down with arms on top of knees, like the one in the photo. The Bulul was used to guard rice crops from rodents and pests; it was also believed to help grow crops and produce more rice.  They are important to the Ifugao history as they serve as a representation of ancestors. The statues are given important rituals that give them their power, as without this ritual they serve no purpose. The statues are treated with kindness and respect to avoid being cursed by ancestors. Now, the Bululs are mass-produced for tourists and have lost their true meaning. Those with Filipino background or those who are interested in Asian culture may be more inclined to e interested in this artifact. Bululs have impacted Filipinos history by showing what our ancestors used to believe in and the stories and myths that go along with the history. One issue arises as its impact may only be toward Filipino culture and not spread to the rest of the globe. Since Bululs do come from the Philippines, somebody from the United States wouldn’t know about what Bululs are and their cultural significance. Even though its impact is localized that doesn’t mean it’s not important. Many statues like Bululs can come from all over the world and each of them having a different meaning and impact to that region.
