Where I am Now: Midterm reflection

For my website, I decided to make very minor changes since I already do enjoy the layout and theme already. I decided to change the background of the website to light purple. I feel as though it blends nicely and contrasts the whiteness of the center of the website. I also chose this color because it represents awareness for sexual assault and sexual violence, which goes along with my topic. Another thing I changed was putting the menu sections in the center rather than the left-hand side. This makes everything feel a lot more centered and easier to navigate. It’s also the first thing that people can see when accessing the website. I feel like these changes really reflect the voice and purpose of my topic especially with the addition of the purple. It may be subtle, but it makes a big difference.

One blog post that I’m really proud of is the very first blog post, “History in the Wild”. I really liked this one because it was the first thing I have written since I had to take a semester off. I really showed got me back into writing and helped me learn from things I need to get better on. I also really liked it because I got to write about a topic I enjoyed and allowed me to expand my knowledge on said topic. It was a fun assignment that definitely helped me gain a better understanding about public history because my topic was so specific the finding sources that could be used was found to be quit difficult. Researching for this blog post helped me get an idea of what sites are credible for research and what sites are not.

One skills assessment that I am proud of is creating a timeline with timeline JS. For this skills assessment I created a timeline of events about WWII in the Philippines with added dates about Comfort women. Even though gathering specific timelines was difficult and time consuming, it helped me broaden my topic and allowed me to provide a better context for users. This to me stands out as a milestone because it showed me how I can make information interactive for users. Being able to create an interactive experience for the first time allows users to better understand history about comfort women. This skills assessment was exciting and pushed me to make information accessible and interactive for everyone.

In this class I want to improve users’ interactive experience and the overall design of my website. Being able to make my website cleaner and easy to navigate will help information become easy to read and understand. A better interactive experience will also make learning my topic regarding comfort women easier to digest, while also sharing the importance of comfort women in WWII. Something that I wanted to add to expand my project is adding a donation page to help victims of sexual abuse and war crimes. This will make the website feel more personable and it also allows users to feel like they are making a difference. I also want to improve my topic and possibly make it broader in certain areas, while also focusing on the main idea of comfort women.
